The size alone of this panorama of Cologne makes it one of the most important works of the widely travelled British landscape painter James Webb. At almost three metres in width, it stands out clearly from his representative vedute, which he painted of many famous sites in Europe and the Orient. It exhudes an extraordinary, museum-like character, supported by his skillful composition. Webb spent time in Cologne the year before the painting was realised in 1870. He contrasts the architectural highlights of the city - the cathedral, which seems to hover above the mist, the towers of the town hall and the churches of Great St. Martin and St. Mary's Assumption - with the hustle and bustle on the ships and banks on both sides of the Rhine. Above, a wide sky with lively clouds arches, creating a well thought-out balance that never gets dull and leaves plenty of details to discover. Yet, it is not just a one to one depiction of the realities of this busy trade city, but a slightly beautified take on it, quite in the spirit of Rhine Romanticism. Thus, there are no hints of the emerging mechanisation: no clouds of smoke from steam ships or locomotives, no modern railroad architecture pushes itself in front of the old churches. Two other, smaller versions of the motif by James Webb are known. One, created shortly before, is now in the City Museum in Bristol; a later version from 1872 adorns the Cologne City Museum. The painting shown here is to be seen as the main work. Without delving too deep into the history of the city, it is worth pointing out one aspect that stands out among all the views of Cologne created over the centuries. Starting with medieval representations, e.g. in the Ursula Legend by Hans Memling, the city silhouette has been characterised by the imposing crane on the unfinished South tower of the cathedral. All views from the late 19th century onwards, however, are dominated by the striking twin spires, which can still be seen from a distance today. There could only have been a short window of time where travellers could see Cologne as James Webb shows it here: the High Cathedral with its filigree pinnacles around the choir and the already extended nave - with scaffolding halfway up the two towers. Around 1868/69 the crane must have disappeared over the course of the construction work; in 1880, ten years after this panorama was created, the completed cathedral was consecrated with a grand ceremony. When James Webb painted this magnificent veduta, he was at the height of his artistic career. For almost twenty years he had regularly exhibited his paintings at the Royal Academy in London and had become a leading British landscape and marine painter; it was not without reason that he was compared with Turner and Constable, in whose artistic tradition he stood. His travels took him to Holland, France, the Orient - and again and again to the Rhine Valley, where Turner was also repeatedly drawn to. Webb's conception of images, on the other hand, is a very contemporary one, very much associated with Rhine Romanticism, which combines images of the picturesque landscape with genre scenes. The Cologne panorama also reflects the feelings of the travellers and visitors of that time, who were impressed by the city and its atmosphere. Allein schon die Größe dieses Köln-Panoramas zeichnet das Gemälde als eines der wichtigsten Werke des weitgereisten englischen Landschaftsmalers James Webb aus. Mit fast drei Metern in der Breite sticht es aus seinen repräsentativen Veduten deutlich hervor, die er von vielen wichtigen Stätten Europas und des Orients gemalt hat. Es entfaltet einen außerordentlichen, musealen Charakter, der besonders durch eine geschickte Komposition unterstützt wird. So hat Webb, der sich in dem Jahr vor der Entstehung des Gemäldes 1870 in Köln aufhielt, die reine Beschreibung der architektonischen Höhepunkte der Stadt - neben dem Dom, der über dem Dunst der Stadt zu schweben scheint, erscheinen die Türme des Rathauses und der Kirchen Groß St. Martin und St. Mariä Himmelfahrt - dem geschäftigen Treiben auf den Schiffen und an Ufern zu beiden Seiten des Rheins gegenübergestellt. Über allem wölbt sich ein weiter Himmel mit lebhaften Wolkenspiel, so dass eine durchdachte Ausgewogenheit entsteht, die niemals langweilig wird und bei der es immer neue Details zu entdecken gibt. Dennoch ist es keine akribische Beschreibung der Handelsmetropole, sondern ein leicht verklärter Blick ganz im Sinne der Rheinromantik. So fehlen die Hinweise auf die aufkommende Technisierung: keine Rauchwolken von Dampfschiffen oder Lokomotiven sind zu erkennen, keine moderne Bahnhofsarchitektur schiebt sich vor die alten Kirchen. Zwei weitere, kleinere Versionen des Motivs sind von James Webb bekannt. Eine, kurz zuvor entstanden, befindet sich heute im City Museum in Bristol; eine spätere Fassung von 1872 schmückt das Kölner Stadtmuseum. Das hier gezeigte Gemälde ist als das Hauptwerk zu sehen. Ohne hier weiter auf die Stadtgeschichte einzugehen, sei dennoch auf einen Aspekt hingewiesen, der eine Besonderheit unter all den Kölnansichten ist, die durch die Jahrhunderte entstanden sind. Seit den mittelalterlichen Darstellungen z.B. im Zuge der Ursulalegende bei Hans Memling wird die Stadtsilhouette durch den sehr präsenten der Kran auf dem unvollendeten Südturm des Doms charakterisiert. Alle Ansichten ab dem ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert hingegen werden durch die prägnanten Spitzen der Doppeltürme überragt, die auch heute noch von Ferne zu erkennen sind.
