Le peintre conjugue ensemble le vécu et le présent, son imaginaire et ses racines culturelles. Dans la première partie de son existence, il va s'initier à la culture européenne. La guerre le renvoie en 1941, à Cuba, où son œuvre va s'épanouir grâce à un contact régénérateur avec son pays d'origine. La transposition sera brutale mais spectaculaire dans son écriture picturale.C'est dans ce contexte qu'a été exécutée la Composition aux personnages. Sous des formes géométriques, aux angles aigus, les têtes, habitées d'une paire d'yeux fixes, composent une scène divinatoire liée aux mythes ancestraux africains.
