Willem van Herp war ein vielseitiger Künstler, der sich insbesondere auf die Darstellung historischer Bildthemen spezialisierte und mit verschiedenen Künstlern zusammenarbeitete, darunter Erasmus Quellinus II. (1607–1678) und Anton Goubau (1616–1698). Das zur Auktion angebotene Werk befand sich einst in der Sammlung der New York Historical Society, wo es, gemeinsam mit zwei weiteren von van Herp ausgeführten Tafeln, rund 100 Jahre verwahrt wurde. Die Tafeln haben gemein, dass sie Szenen aus der Passion Christi zeigen und damit möglicherweise Teil einer umfangreicheren Bildserie waren.
