Formerly attributed to Jan Gossaert called Mabuse by Pierre M. Blanc (a copy of the expertise accompanies the lot) , the present Madonna and the Child, was clearly a very popular composition by Joos Van Cleve as attested to by the numerous versions produced by the artist's workshop. Similar versions were formerly at the Ehrich Galleries, New York; The American Art Association, New York, The Achillito Chiesa collection and Artcurial, Paris, on 16 June 2020, lot. 220.
