Lot no. 10
10. * A carved alabaster figure of the Virgin Weeping from a Lamentation scene, Italian, Sicily, circa 1500-1520 Dressed in a dress tightened at the waist, with bodice open in a square and punctured sleeves puffing on the shoulders. Our Virgin was undoubtedly part of a Lamentation scene, and her long, wavy locks leaving her forehead bare bear witness to the mastery of the sculptor. There are similarities with an early 16th-century alabaster Saint Madeleine in the parish church of Essegney in Meuse (Bar-le-Duc, Ligier Richier et la Sculpture en Lorraine au XVIè siècle, 11 octobre - 31 décembre, Musée de Bar-le-Duc, 1985, p. 22-23, N°11). 21 wide, 22cm deep, 33cm high (8in wide, 8 1/2in deep, 12 1/2in high) Provenance Palau Antiguitats, Barcelona The Property of an English Private Collector
