106. A KURA (SADDLE) AND ABUMI (STIRRUP) SET
Edo period (1615-1868), 18th/19th century
The saddle decorated overall in gold nashiji with a family crest in gold hiramaki-e on the front of the pommel and rear of the cantle, fitted with four doeskin straps holding black-lacquer shihode (tie-downs) decorated with scrolling vines in gold hiramaki-e, the shitakura (inner saddle pads), kurashiki (saddle flaps), aori (saddle flaps), and stirrup leather all lacquered gold, the shitakura applied with gilt-metal edging, the iron stirrups decorated in flush inlays of silver and brass with an anchor in crashing waves, signed on the uprights Kawakatsu saku (made by Kawakatsu), with decorative tassels and ties, and a wood stand
