Lot no. 107
107. [Gemini X] THE SPACECRAFT APPROACHING AGENA FOR THE WORLD'S FIRST FLAWLESS SPACE DOCKING Michael Collins, 18-21 July 1966 Printed 1966. Vintage chromogenic print on fibre-based Kodak paper [NASA image S-66-46130]. Numbered "NASA S-66-46130" in red in the top margin, with NASA caption and "A Kodak Paper" watermark on the reverse (issued by NASA Manned Spacecraft Centre, Houston, Texas). 20.3 x 25.4 cm. (8 x 10 in.) Historical context This spectacular photograph captures Gemini X's spacecraft nearly touching the Agena 10 Target Vehicle (about 15 feet apart) during the final moment of approach for docking. This docking carried special significance, following the near-disastrous incident during Gemini VIII, where a docking malfunction sent the spacecraft spiralling out of control. In contrast, the Gemini X docking was the first flawless execution of its kind, proving that spacecraft could rendezvous and connect safely in orbit—a critical milestone for complex missions, including the eventual Apollo Moon landings.
