Historical context This spectacular photograph captures Gemini X's spacecraft nearly touching the Agena 10 Target Vehicle (about 15 feet apart) during the final moment of approach for docking. This docking carried special significance, following the near-disastrous incident during Gemini VIII, where a docking malfunction sent the spacecraft spiralling out of control. In contrast, the Gemini X docking was the first flawless execution of its kind, proving that spacecraft could rendezvous and connect safely in orbit—a critical milestone for complex missions, including the eventual Apollo Moon landings.
