Three Karlsruhe Majolica wall plaques, possibly trial pieces, of "Ruhende", "Orientalisches Paar" and "Tänzerin", circa 1920 or later Modelled by Paul Scheurich, produced in earthenware or biscuit and the scenes detailed and lively with typical Art Deco stylisation to the figures and their surrounding, and animals alike, 44.5cm high, 36.5cm wide, unmarked (some minor chips to the rims) (3) Although contractually bound to the Meissen manufactory, Paul Scheurich was allowed by its management to deliver six relief plaques with Oriental designs to the Grossherzogliche Majolika-Manufaktur [Grand Ducal Majolica Manufactory] in Karlsruhe in Baden. It is not certain whether Scheurich delivered the models in plaster or clay, or just the designs. A sheet with Scheurich's designs for six tiles in ink and watercolours is preserved in the archives of the Karlsruhe Majolika manufactory (Erna and Johannes Rafael, Paul Scheurich: Reliefs in Meißener Porzellan, in Keramos 147, 1995, p.101, ill.2). The plaques were produced there between 1920 and 1926 to cater for the revival of interest in architectural ceramic tiles. Unlike the examples sold in these rooms as part of the collection of Professor Raphael, these examples were apparently not glazed or decorated, the colour of the clay as depicted in the catalogue. It could be that these served as the factory models or bozzetti for the finished pieces which were rendered in a reddish stoneware with colourful glazes.
