Lot no. 113
113. A pair of early 18th century silver candlesticks, Saumur Resting on a square molded base, the shaft is flanged between two collars and the spigot is octagonal in cross-section. Unidentified goldsmith, height 20cm, weight 880gms. A pair of candlesticks of the same model, bearing similar hallmarks, is reproduced in LES ORFÈVRES D'ANJOU ET BAS MAINE, notice 137. It is stated that this is an "Unidentified Master" .... He does not appear to have belonged to the town's community of silversmiths, whose five successive masters are known from 1654 to the Revolution... The presence of a fleur-de-lis in his hallmark could mean that he was received by royal privilege, or that he was a master from Paris... who took advantage of the privilege they were granted to set up wherever they pleased to establish themselves in Saumur."
