Lot no. 117
117. YAQONA BOWL, FIJI dari ni yaqona wood 55 cm. long Provenance Private collection, England The form of this bowl is unusual having a lozenge-shaped body with a handle to one end and a spout to the other which is carved on each side with parallel grooves. The bowl shows considerable signs of age and use, with a fine old patina and must date well back into the nineteenth or possibly eighteenth century although the details of its history are unknown. Whilst larger bowls were used for the preparation and serving of yaqona in public ritual, smaller bowls such as this were used in priestly rituals for the consumption of yaqona or for scented coconut oil.
