12. Master of the Greenville Tondo (active 1454-1513) Virgin and Child with Angels oil on panel, tondo oil on panel, tondo diam. 83.4 cm (32 13/16 in.) Provenance Private collection, Italy The present lot is here attributed for the first time to the Master of the Greenville Tondo, an anonymous artist of a small group of works. Most probably active in Umbria or Tuscany, the artist was first identified by Federico Zeri through the celebrated Madonna and Child with Angels tondo in the Bob Jones University collection, Greenville, South Carolina (inv. 14.1). Both Zeri and Everett Fahy went on to identify more than twenty works by the artist. A close follower of Pietro Perugino, the artist displays in this work the gentle modelling of faces, clarity of form, and harmonious balance characteristic of the Peruginesque circle.
