128. A very rare Meissen large white group of Europa and the Bull (Europa auf dem Stier), circa 1933-48
Modelled by Paul Scheurich on a narrow rectangular base moulded with waves and reeds, 67cm high, 44cm across, incised signature 'Scheurich/ 32' to rear of base, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue and impressed crossed swords mark and 'Weiss' to rear of base, further impressed crossed swords and 'Weiss' to the base, incised model number A1192, impressed former's number 150
Scheurich began work on the large group of Europa and the Bull by 1930 at the latest, though his attention was diverted by other projects and he only delivered the model to Meissen in March 1932 for which he was paid RM 3,200. It may only have been produced in porcelain from 1934, when the first sale is recorded. By 1940, only three examples were with dealers (Johannes Rafael, Paul Scheurich 1883-1945 Porzellane für die Meissener Manufaktur, Meissener Manuskripte, Sonderband VIII, 1995, no. 45).
Another example was in the collection of Prof. J. Rafael, sold in these rooms, 14 April 2022, lot 104.
