13. A pair of Meissen figures of gardeners, circa 1750
Modelled by J.F. Eberlein, the lady, later decorated, with vegetables gathered in her apron, wearing a straw hat, turquoise bodice and white dress edged with a band of purple and gilt foliate scrollwork and trellis panels, the man wearing a white jacket with matching border, a pale-yellow hat and turquoise breeches, holding a basket of vegetables balanced on a tree-stump, the bases applied with leaves and flowers, 17.5cm and 19cm high, crossed swords marks in underglaze-blue to rear edge of bases (minor restoration) (2)
The female figure is listed in Eberlein's work records in September 1746: "1 Gärtner-Weib mit einer Schürtze voll Garten-Früchte und einen Schobs-Hut auf dem Kopfe, zum Waaren-Lager gefertiget" [a female gardener with an apron full of garden fruit and a wicker hat on the head, produced for the storehouse].
