A GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF CHAMUNDA
NEPAL, 19TH CENTURY
尼泊爾 十九世紀 銅鎏金恰母妲像
Provenance:
With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970s
Few Himalayan sculptures rival the menace of the Hindu goddess Chamuda, the furious emanation of Kali. Named after the two demons she defeated, Chanda and Munda, the latter's head held in her hand is regarded as her most powerful weapon. Her angular features reveal a grimacing face and menacing smile. She squats victorious over the partially prone demon (pretasana). A closely related example is held in the collection of Bharat Kala Bhawan, Varanasi, (15009). Also compare with an 18th century illustrated folio with Chamunda as Durga in the Rubin Museum of Art, New York (Pal, Durga, 2009, p. 124, no. 18).
