Historical context
The Lunar Orbiters featured an ingenious imaging system consisting of a dual-lens camera, a film processing unit, a readout scanner, and a film handling apparatus. The film was developed onboard, scanned, and transmitted back to Earth framelet by framelet for reassembly. This image, with its stunning abstract beauty, reveals the daunting and rugged far side of the Moon.
This medium resolution photograph (Lunar Orbiter frame V-103M) was taken with the 80mm lens from an altitude of 1236 km. The Sea of Moscow is well visible at the bottom. Latitude: 37.85° N, longitude: 178.75° E.
