138. A rare Karlsruhe Majolica figure of a shepherd (Hirte), after 1933 Modelled by Paul Scheurich, the reclining shepherd asleep, resting against a tree stump, his mouth half-opened, his instrument by his side, decorated in unfired polychrome colours including different shades of green, red and blue, 49cm wide, 27cm high, the raised Karlsruhe workshop stamp to the base and collector's label M1944B in white enamel of a later date (the neck of his bagpipe instrument missing) In 1933, with the permission of the Meissen manufactory, Paul Scheurich supplied three models to the Majolica manufactory in Karlsruhe where Wolfgang Müller von Baczko had been the director between 1928 and 1932. Müller von Baczko valued Scheurich's work very highly and for the three models Karlsruhe developed a special dark-brown clay.
