139. A FINE LACQUER GUNBAI (WAR FAN) IN A STORAGE BOX WITH AN INTEGRATED SUZURIBAKO (BOX FOR WRITING UTENSILS)
Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century
The gunbai carved and assembled in wood and decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e with astronomical motifs on one side, and the sun and moon on clouds and a manji character on the other, all against a glossy black-lacquered wood ground, the silver fittings chiselled with the heraldic crest of the Ashina clan; with a fitted storage box decorated with the same crests in gold hiramaki-e on a black ishime lacquer ground, the interior of the box fitted with a fully equipped suzuribako (box for writing utensils)
