Lot no. 139
139. A rare Karlruhe Majolica figure of an African woman, circa 1933-39
Modelled by Paul Scheurich, model number 3615, signed "SCHEURICH" to the reverse of the base, with an ostrich feather skirt painted in green and pink, and a feathered fan in her hands, seated on a tree stump above a large fish, 54cm high, raised crown above "Karlsruhe" to base, (head restuck)
In 1933, with the permission of the Meissen manufactory, Paul Scheurich supplied three models to the Majolica manufactory in Karlsruhe where Wolfgang Müller von Baczko had been the director between 1928 and 1932. Müller von Baczko valued Scheurich's work very highly and for the three models Karlsruhe developed a special dark-brown clay.
