The present work is a copy after the two known preparatory studies by Théodore Géricault, executed in 1812 for his celebrated painting Officier de chasseurs à cheval de la Garde impériale, chargeant, now in the Musée du Louvre (inv. 4885). The bozzetti are held at the Musée du Louvre (RF210) and the Musée Bonnat-Helleu in Bayonne (inv. 76).
