142. A Meissen octagonal plate, circa 1730
Painted in Kakiemon style with the Shiba Onko or "Hob in the Well" pattern, the brown-edged rim with a border of flowers and foliage, on a high footrim, 21cm across, crossed swords mark in blue enamel, incised Japanese Palace inventory mark "N=38-/ W" (restored)

The 1770 inventory of the Japanese Palace in Dresden records "Vier Stück detto [8.eckichte Schaale, mit übeschlagenen braunen Rande, inwendig Pagoden gemahlt], 1½. Zoll hoch, 9. Zoll in DiamL No. 39" [four ditto (octagonal dishes with everted brown roms, painted with Pagodas inside) ...], quoted by C.
