Lot no. 20
(1494). THOMAS À KEMPIS. OPERA. EPISTOLAE ET ALIA OPUSCULA. Nuremberg, Caspar Hochfeder, 29 November 1494. Small gothic folio of 184 leaves, wooden boards covered with cold-stamped brown calf, author's name stamped at the top of the first cover, corners decorated with lilies and copper clasps (contemporary binding). Remarkable and rare 2-column Gothic printing of the complete works of Thomas A Kempis preceded by a printed protest against the attribution of this book to Gerson. This collection opens with the Imitatio Christi, followed by Gerson's De Meditatione Cordis with all the author's opuscules and treatises, including letters exchanged with his uncle Georges Pirckheimer and Pierre Danhauser. BEAUTIFULLY PRESERVED IN ITS ORIGINAL BINDING, it bears the handwritten inscription of the convent of Saint Mang founded in the 9th century and some marginal handwritten annotations. Small paper losses and holes at the bottom of the title, small worm work on the last 2 leaves, restorations to the hinges and the upper cover (ISTC, it00352000) (Hain-Copinger n°9769).
