150. ALBERT GLEIZES (1881-1953)
Decoration for Moscow Station, between 1927 and 1929
(Varichon, 859)
Stencil in eighteen colours on wove paper
Signed and dated 1920 lower right
41.5 x 33 cm (view)
Pochoir in eighteen colours on wove paper, signed and dated lower right
The date inscribed by Gleize on certain copies is that of the painting corresponding to the stencil and not the date on which the stencil was made.
This work is based on an oil painting of the same name, painted in 1920.
On his return from New York, Gleizes worked on a monumental project: the creation of a mural decoration for the Moscow railway station. He produced a number of studies and a large oil painting, but the mural was never completed.
