(1543). ARENA (Antonius). AD SUOS COMPAGNONES STUDIANTES QUI SUNT DE PERSONA FRIANTES BASSAS DANSAS IN GALLANTI STILO BISOGNATAS : ET DE NOVO PER IPSUM CORRECTAS ET IOLITER AUGMENTA CUM GUERRA ROMANA...
Lyon, in the house of the Prince (Pierre de Sainte-Lucie), 21 November 1542.
In-12 gothic folio of 48 leaves, red morocco, gilt fleurons at the corners and in the centre of the boards, ornate ribbed spine, gilt lace inside, gilt edges (Chambolle-Duru).
"Very rare edition, not cited by Brunet, of these poems in Macaronic verse (altered Latin with Italian, French and Provençal words intermingled). At the end it reads: "Explicit utilissimum opus guerrarum & dansarum impressatum in bragardissima villa de Leone per discretum hominem magisitu[m] Petrum de sancta Lucia / alias le Prince...".
The title is printed in black and red with a small woodcut coat of arms charged with three radiant suns and the motto "Partout Solies". The author was born in Solliers near Toulon and died in 1544. The volume also contains songs in French and an explanation of a system of choreographic notation based on typographical characters. Lyon editions prior to 1550 were all published by Cl. Nourry or Pierre de Sainte-Lucie, and only very few copies are known to exist. We read at the head of an old handwriting: "Seul exemplaire connu" (Only known copy). A fine copy established by Chambolle-Duru. (USTC 158619 ed. of 1535, 1 ex.).
