(1550). APIAN- WALDSEEMULLER. COSMOGRAPHIAE INTRODUCTIO. Paris, Guillaume Cavellat, 1550. In-12 of 46-2 (last bl.) leaves, stiff vellum (old binding). First Parisian edition, decorated with an armillary sphere on the title and 27 ENGRAVED WOODEN FIGURES in the text, 4 of which are full-page. Chapter 28 is devoted to America. The first edition of this work was published in Ingolstadt in 1529. An astronomer and mathematician born in Leisnig in Saxony, Peter Bienewitz, known as Petrus Apianus or Peter Apian (1495-1552), was the author in 1520 of a planisphere showing the New World (Tipus Orbis Universalis), which complemented the work of Martin Waldseemuller. He was also one of the first to propose observing the movements of the moon to determine longitudes. A good copy, sprinkled with handwritten annotations from the period. Traces of wetness in the lower corner of the leaves (USTC 150456, 12 copies).
