Lot no. 278
(1555). TYARD (Pontus de). SOLITAIRE SECOND OU PROSE DE LA MUSIQUE.
Lyon, Jean de Tournes, 1555.
In-4° of 160-[16] pages, red morocco, large gilt design in the centre of the boards, double gilt fillet, decorated ribbed spine, gilt lace inside, gilt edges (Hardy-Mennil).
This work is not, as one might think, a sequel to the Solitaire premier, which contains mixed poetry. The Solitaire Second is a special treatise on music.
Dedication by Maurice Scève placed opposite the beautiful portrait of Pontus "engraved with remarkable width and suppleness by Petit Bernard" (Cartier) and some technical plates drawn by the author.
The fold-out plate contains a woodcut depicting the monochord, an instrument "by means of which the different consonances are known in different proportions". Small light stains on the front cover, otherwise a fine copy bound with care in the taste of the period. Unidentified armorial bookplate. (Tchemerzine V, 892) (Cartier n°318) (Brunet V, 853) (USTC 39158).
