Lot no. 331
(1564-1557). OVIDE. LA METAMORPHOSE D'OVIDE FIGUREE. Lyon, Jean de Tournes, 1564. In-8 of 92 leaves, the last blank, marbled calf (18th century binding). Precious booklet dedicated to Diane de Poitiers, first published in 1557. It is illustrated with 178 FINE WOODEN ENGRAVINGS executed by Bernard Salomon, then associated with Jean de Tournes. All the pages are decorated with a variety of frames, 6 of which feature grotesque or licentious subjects (figures of satyrs, tritons, Rabelaisian monsters, etc.). According to Picot, the eights could be the work of J. de Vauzelles. Folio D3 containing 2 erotic figures (Mars and Venus surprised and Phébus depucelant Clytie) has been mutilated and repaired (Cartier n°376) (Mortimer n°403). Bound in suite: - MISCELLANEOUS PORTRAITS. Lyon, Jean de Tournes, 1557. Title and 62 unnumbered leaves. These delightful and beautifully engraved woodcuts are in the best Petit Bernard manner. Second edition published one year after the first (which contained the same illustrations) and which was untitled. The copy is complete with 62 woodcuts, which is very rare, Cartier only indicating incomplete copies. Two engraved bookplates pasted on the last two endpapers: Duc d'Orléans and Guillaume III d'Angleterre (Cartier 353 and 387). Rare set of 2 booklets illustrated by Petit Bernard and printed by Jean de Tournes. Spine rebound.
