A large XIXe century bowl in gilt-bronze supported by three winged sphinxes The bowl is supported by three busts of winged women with clawed feet, a central baluster shaft with volutes, and a triangular base. (oxidation) 27.5cm in diameter, 44.5cm high (10 1/2in in diameter, 17 1/2in high). Fantastic creatures with the body of a lion and a human head, sphinxes are associated with wisdom, mystery and protection. Their image is frequently employed in the decorative arts.
