En entaillant la surface de la toile, la création ne devint plus additive mais soustractive. L'expérience, chez l'artiste, remplace la mimesis ; comme la dimension remplace la surface. L'unité de temps, quant à elle, est inscrite au revers de ses toiles, si recherchées, comme une ode à l'infini : « Attesa », l'attente. Dans une note écrite au début des années 1950, le peintre écrivit : « Je crois à Van Gogh, couleur-lumière / Je crois à Boccioni, dynamisme plastique / Je crois à Kandinsky, abstraction concrète / Je crois aux spatiaux, Temps-Espace ». En ce milieu de vingtième siècle, l'Histoire de l'art, sous les mains de cet artiste intimement phénoménologique et évolutionniste, allait s'éveiller à une aube nouvelle. Les tagli (fentes) de Fontana appartiennent aux mythes fondateurs de l'art contemporain. La philosophie de cet artiste, dès l'origine, dépasse le champ de l'art contemporain, en ce que l'homme, en explorateur, toujours pensa la peinture et la sculpture. La course aux étoiles qui passionne le monde dans les années 1950-1960, se lit dans chacune de ses œuvres : de l'espace, le peintre en fit sa conquête. A cet égard, son Manifesto Blanco (co-écrit en 1946) scelle les prémices fondamentales d'un art plus radical où la pensée prime sur le geste. Le Spatialisme, le groupe Nul, le groupe ZERO et toutes des générations futures se réclameront de ce père spirituel qui, le premier avec Yves Klein, à la création fit se soustraire le créateur. « Concepto espacial », que l'on peut lire sur certains de ses dessins datant de 1946, sera un titre apologétique, puisque son art à cette entité se résume. « La couleur, un élément de l'espace ; le son, un élément du temps ; et le mouvement oscille entre temps et espace ». Concetto Spaziale 50-B.1. est sa première œuvre transpercée : la lumière, caractérisée par la longueur d'ondes dans le vide, à l'infini permet à sa toile de s'éprendre d'un lien invisible. Concetto spaziale, Attesa 1963-1964, que nous avons l'honneur de présenter, appartient à une merveilleuse collection privée italienne. La délicate précision de sa fente laisse perler la lumière, dans ce vert d'une profondeur veloutée. Comme autant de fragments d'un journal intime, l'inscription au dos, quant à elle, offre un supplément d'âme à ce tableau, faisant d'elle l'icône absolue des tagli, qui firent de Lucio Fontana un artiste de renommée internationale. Ces dernières furent présentées à la galleria del Naviglio lors d'une exposition personnelle avant d'être dévoilées en France à la galerie Stadler en mars 1959. Réapparu sur la scène parisienne grâce à Iris Clert en 1957, qui le convia à son micro-salon d'avril, l'artiste, dont l'inventivité durant près de quarante ans ne cessa d'enchanter les plus grands critiques d'art (Michel Tapié, qui le fera connaître au Japon, Pierre Restany, Pierre Guéguen, Alain Jouffroy, etc.), est aujourd'hui présenté par les plus grandes institutions internationales. Peu après sa disparition, le Musée d'Art Moderne de la ville de Paris (1970) et le musée Guggenheim de New York lui consacrèrent des rétrospectives de grandes ampleurs. D'argonaute à bâtisseur, de ceux qui posent la pierre d'angle, Lucio Fontana, dont l'intelligence au cœur fut toujours indivisiblement mêlée, appartenait à ces hommes qui sont les rêves auxquels ils croient. With a sovereign, immemorial gesture Lucio Fontana, hand unwavering, slashed the sacrosanct unity of place, abolishing all limits of formal configuration to achieve spatiality at once unfathomable, and cosmic. By cutting into the surface of the canvas, creation became subtractive rather than additive. For the artist, experimentation replaces mimesis, just as dimension replaces surface. The unity of time is inscribed on the back of his much sought-after canvases, an ode to infinity as it were, « Attesa »: expectation. In a note written in the early 1950s, the painter said: "I believe in Van Gogh, colour-light / I believe in Boccioni, plastic dynamism / I believe in Kandinsky, concrete abstraction / I believe in the Spatialists, Time-Space". At the mid-twentieth century, under the hands of this phenomenological and evolutionary artist, an advent was about to awaken art history. Fontana's tagli (slits) belong to the founding myths of contemporary art. From the outset, Fontana's philosophy spanned further afield than contemporary art, indeed he was an explorer who saw painting and sculpture as concepts. The race to the stars that enthralled the world in the 1950s and 1960s is inherent to each of his works: space was the painter's to conquer. In this respect, his Manifesto Blanco (co-written in 1946) sealed the fundamental premises of a more radical art in which thought took precedence over gesture. Spatialism, the NUL Group, ZERO and all future generations would lay claim to their spiritual father who, along with Yves Klein, was the first to remove the creator from creation. "Concepto espacial", written on some of his drawings dating from 1946, would be a eulogistic title, since such a notion is the essence of his art. "Colour being an element of space; sound an element of time; while movement oscillates between time and space." Concetto Spaziale 50-B.1. is his first pierced work: light, characterised by the wave lengths within the void, is the invisible link by which infinity enraptures the canvas. Concetto spaziale, Attesa 1963-1964, which we have the honour of presenting here, belongs to a wonderful private Italian collection. The delicate precision of its slit reveals beads of light within an expanse of deep velvet green. Like the fragments of a diary, the inscription on the back adds an extra dimension of soul to the painting, making it the absolute icon of the tagli which would grant Lucio Fontana international renown. The series was shown in a solo exhibition at the Galleria del Naviglio before being unveiled in France at the Galerie Stadler in March 1959. The artist had re-emerged on the Paris scene thanks to Iris Clert in 1957, who invited him to her April micro-salon. His inventiveness over almost forty years never ceased to delight the greatest art critics (Michel Tapié, who introduced him to the Japanese, Pierre Restany, Pierre Guéguen, Alain Jouffroy, etc.), and today he is shown by the greatest international institutions. Shortly after his death, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1970) and the Guggenheim Museum in New York devoted major retrospectives to his work. Whether argonaut or architect, as one who lays the cornerstone, Lucio Fontana, whose intelligence and heart were always indivisibly intertwined, belonged to those men who embody the dreams they believe in.
