160. A pair of small candlesticks in the form of satyrs, 19th century A jug shaped like a basket of flowers, with a quadrangular base. (slight oxidation), 7.5cm wide, 7.5cm deep, 19.5cm high (2 1/2in wide, 2 1/2in deep, 7 1/2in high). Companions of Dionysus, satyrs accompany the Maenads in processions celebrating the god. Intended as guardians of flocks and the countryside, they are nevertheless portrayed as carefree beings who drink, seduce and amuse themselves, evoking the freedom and fertility of nature and embodying instinct. They are represented as hybrid creatures, half-man and half-goat.
