The episode shown in the present painting is said to be Christ crossing the Brook Kidron after his arrest. It is a subject rarely depicted in paintings but an example can be found in Hieronymous Bosch's The Capture of Christ now in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon (inv. no. 1498). The attribution to the workshop of Wolfgang Krodel has been suggested in the past by Dr. Ludwig Meyer (Archiv Für Kunstgeschichte, Munich).
