Ryūkyū Islands, Edo period (1615-1868), 17th/18th century
Circular and set on tripod feet decorated in inlays of mother-of-pearl and crushed and applied iridescent shell, the upper surface of the lid with scrolling chrysanthemum, the sides with stepped sections of crushed shell and applied shell in chequerboard design, all on a ground of black lacquer, with additional chrysanthemum blossoms in gold hiramaki-e, possibly added in Japan
