Scenes appear in the material, scraped away in places, forming a composition dominated by verticals, horizontals and obliques. His first large canvases date from 1985, and show affinities with certain German painters whose work he admires, such as Markus Lüpertz, Sigmar Polke, Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz.
