Four Doccia chocolate cups, circa 1770 Each decorated in low-relief moulding with scenes taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses, with entwined vining branch handles, the rims in gilt, each 7.5cm high, (4) Literature Biancalana, Alessandro, Porcellane Ginori a Doccia. La stanza delle meraviglie di casa Colli, 2023, pp. 274-281, cats. 46-49 The scenes represented in basso rilievo are taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses, after engravings by Bernard Picart (1673-1733) published in Abbot Antoine Banier's translation of the Greek text, Les Métamorphoses d'Ovide, en latin et en françois, Amsterdam, 1732. They include a Bacchanal, the Triumph of Bacchus, the Triumph of Ceres, the Chariot of Apollo, the Triumph of Neptune and the Abduction of Proserpina. A very similar Doccia tea service with basso rilievo Ovidian scenes is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. 31.132.2a, b).
