Lot no. 30906
1900-1920, an exceptional and unique collection of postcards devoted to the Meuse département (55); exceptional because it is made up of 6,000 different cards in 57 binders (!) and unique because all the towns and villages in the département are represented and listed alphabetically. Postcards of traditional views and picturesque sites, but also very unusual cards relating to trades, traditions, festivals and so on. In addition, a large number of the cards cover the First World War period, and the Meuse département was the scene of several terrible battles during the conflict (St-Mihiel, Verdun and others); the collection therefore contains hundreds of cards relating to the conflict (trenches, troop movements, military forts, villages destroyed and disappeared, etc.). It's a lifelong collection, assembled with precision and erudition. The overall quality is superb, and a must-see!
