Lot no. 81
1939 - Citroën Traction 11 C Commercial French historic registration title French historic registration title Chassis n° 291754 Perhaps one of the rarest Tractions. Certainly the most versatile! Perhaps one of the rarest Tractions. Certainly the most versatile! - Since the launch of the first Citroën in 1919, the "Chevrons" firm has made it a point of honour to offer versatile commercial versions in its catalogue, aimed at craftsmen and small business owners who don't have the option of owning two vehicles. The same car has to be able to do everything. - The innovative Traction, launched in 1934, was no exception to the rule, and the 11 Commerciale was presented at the 1937 Paris Motor Show. It looked less utilitarian than the Rosalie it replaced. And for good reason, even though its interior was largely uncluttered, it was no more and no less than a Traction Familiale - a model presented as early as July 1934 - equipped with a double tailgate. - This ultra-versatile Commerciale is a kind of MPV before its time, offering unprecedented modularity, including a wooden floor that can be adjusted to two different heights, folding seats and rear doors that open to 180 degrees. There's even a trapdoor in the middle of the floor to allow any liquids to drain out. - The war did not bring production of the 11 Commerciale to a complete halt, but while 1,189 and 1,478 examples were produced in 1938 and 1939 respectively, output fell to 542 in 1940 and 350 in 1941. Production stopped in October 1941 and did not resume until 1953. - The car we are presenting is one of only 7 surviving examples from pre-war production. It is therefore a true rarity, and is presented in beautiful used condition following a high-quality restoration. - It is fitted with Pilote wheels, a period roof rack and its extremely rare original wooden floor. It has only had 5 owners since new!
