Lot no. 19
1950 - Studebaker Champion Convertible French historic registration title French historic registration title Chassis no. G492649 One of designer Raymond Loewy's most fascinating creations, here in Convertible version! "One of designer Raymond Loewy's most fascinating creations, here in Convertible version!" - Produced from 1939 to 1959, the Studebaker Champion followed the trends of its time and underwent a number of stylistic evolutions; it was powered by an in-line 6-cylinder engine that developed 85 bhp in 1950. It was the Champion that saved Studebaker from bankruptcy... - Created by two of the greatest automotive stylists of all time - Raymond Loewy and Virgil Exner - the sensational new post-war Studebakers featured a swept-back front wingline, lowered bonnets and, in the case of the Starlight Coupé, a stunning panoramic rear window. - The 1950 Champion model took a sharp turn for the better in terms of styling, with French designer Raymond Loewy imposing the "bullet nose" reminiscent of aircraft engines; with this bold look, these cars were to make their mark on American motoring history and become iconic models. - The car that illustrates these pages is a rare Convertible version, very elegant with its Petroleum Blue colour, combined with a beige (electric) soft top and a red (refurbished) interior. It was in the hands of the same owner, a Frenchman living in the USA, for almost 15 years. On his return to France, he imported the car and sold it to the current owner, who is now moving on to other projects. - With its atypical and endearing design, its American equipment and its torquey 6-cylinder engine mated to a 3-speed gearbox + overdrive, it's an invitation to take a long-haul trip, with the family or solo. Note that the car is accompanied by its pedal-powered toy, a Russian Moskvich production, directly inspired by the Champion, and repainted in the same configuration as the big one. - Produced from 1939 to 1959, the Studebaker Champion followed the trend of its era and thus underwent numerous stylistic evolutions; it was powered by an inline 6-cylinder engine that developed 85 hp in 1950.
