(1953). VALERY (Paul). VIRGILE'S BUCOLIQUES. Paris, Scripta et Picta, 1953. In-folio in sheets, in printed cover, publisher's blue folder and slipcase. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT WORKS ILLUSTRATED BY JACQUES VILLON. First edition of Paul Valéry's translation, masterfully embellished in colour. The illustration includes a frontispiece and 45 mid-page compositions drawn on stone in colour by Jacques Villon, who engraved each colour on a different stone in his own hand. Three hundred stones were used for the book, all printed on Mourlot presses. Edition strictly limited to 269 copies, this one of 245 numbered on Arches. A fine copy.
