Adoptées par les stars, les hommes politiques, les dandys aisés et les gangsters de haut rang. La marque va poursuivre dans cette voie jusqu'aux années 1940. Chez Packard, le nom de Caribbean apparaît en 1953 pour qualifier un cabriolet de luxe venant coiffer la gamme, et reprenant certains traits de style du show car Pan American présenté l'année précédente. Il comporte une calandre qui reprend le dessin traditionnel de la marque, en fronton arrondi, avec d'épaisses barrettes chromées répondant à la vogue de l'époque. L'arrière reçoit en série une roue de secours extérieure cachée sous un capotage, selon la configuration dite Continental. En 1954, le modèle gagne quelques luxueux détails de ligne et de finition, comme un passage de roue arrière plus bas, des enjoliveurs de phares plus travaillés, une baguette chromée délimitant le thème de peinture deux-tons... Elle reçoit la dernière version du huit-cylindres en ligne, dans sa cylindrée la plus élevée de 5 880 cm3. Avec quelque 400 exemplaires produits cette année-là, la Caribbean 1954 est la plus rare de toutes. Notre collectionneur est tombé amoureux de cette voiture lors d'un voyage en Californie où elle figurait dans le show room d'un concessionnaire de voitures modernes à santa Barbara. Elle avait au préalable bénéficié d'une restauration de très haute qualité au début des années 2000. En deux-tons blanche et noire, elle arbore des chromes resplendissants et sa ligne un peu démodée par rapport aux Cadillac de la même année traduit l'hésitation de la marque à se lancer complètement dans l'ère moderne, en restant attachée à ses valeurs traditionnelles de luxe discret. Cette Caribbean répond malgré tout à la vogue dans laquelle est entraînée toute l'Amérique des années 1950, sur laquelle souffle un vent de liberté, ce qui s'exprime par une finition opulente. La banquette avant (très bien refaite), les vitres et la capote sont à commande électrique et le tableau de bord comporte un autoradio et de belles commandes chromées de ventilation. La conduite de cette voiture correspond à celle des longues américaines des années 1950: avec un moteur au couple élevé accolé à une boîte automatique, elle incite au déplacement tranquille et confortable, l'habitacle spacieux permettant d'accueillir suffisamment d'occupants pour alimenter une conversation animée, tout en profitant du paysage qui défile à l'horizon. Popular with celebrities, politicians, wealthy dandies and gangsters too, the Packard brand continued as a prestige car maker till the 1940s. With the Packard branding the Caribbean was launched in 1953 - a luxury convertible that capped the range and incorporating some of the features from the Pan American show car shown the year earlier. It had a grille which incorporated the traditional design of the brand, with a rounded front, with thick chrome bars that are line with fashion then. The rear featured an external spare wheel hidden under a cover, using the Continental configuration. In 1954, the model gained a few luxurious details such as the lower rear wheel hubcaps and the headlamps, a chrome strip defining the theme of the two-tone paint ... It car also featured the latest in-line eight-cylinder, in biggest displacement of 5880cc. With some 400 cars produced that year, the 1954 Caribbean is one of the rarest of all. Our collector fell in love with this car on a trip to California, where it was in a showroom of a modern car dealership in Santa Barbara. The car had been subject to a very high quality restoration in the early 2000s. In white and black two-tone, it features quality chrome with a line that is a bit dated compared to the Cadillac from the same year, reflecting the reluctance of the brand to engage fully into the competition of the 1950s, while remaining committed to its traditional core values of discrete luxury. The Caribbean still meets the fashion of the America of the 1950s, on which blows the wind of freedom, expressed by an opulent finish. The front seat (redone excellently), the windows and the hood are all electrically operated and the dashboard has a radio and beautiful chrome ventilation controls. The car drives like a car from the American 1950s: a high torque engine mated to an automatic transmission, it encourages a quiet and comfortable ride, a roomy cockpit to accommodate occupants and enough to power for an animated conversation while enjoying the passing scenery.
