Lot no. 87
1957 Volkswagen Combi Samba-bus " 23 Fenêtres "
Carte grise française
Châssis n° 274460
Moteur n° 1942209

Chassis no. 274460
Engine no. 1942209
- Sold new in France
- Matching numbers and colours
- Most sought-after version
The iconic Combi has long since become a legendary motor for generations of travellers, and the 23-window Samba with broad sunroof is a prized treasure among collectors.
This vehicle left the factory in July 1957 and was sold new in France the following month, as attested by its Volkswagen certificate. It then made the journey to Madrid in 1959 where it would remain for many years in the lovely Spanish climate.
When the car was refurbished, its original 'sealing wax' red colour was maintained, while the brown roof was replaced by a more elegant black. The upholstery also respects the original factory brown colour and is in good condition.
Another plus point is the original 1,192 cc engine, which is still in good working condition. The details that make these versions so special have of course been preserved, including the 6-volt electrical system, the indicator arrows, and the optional vintage Blaupunkt radio. The clock on the basic dashboard showed 23,208 km at the time of our inspection. Coming from a very selective collection, notably boasting Beetles and Combis, this vehicle has been uniformly maintained, lightly burnished, and is compliant with its original configuration. We loved the bright interior with 9 seats, which really entice you do head out on the road. You'll be hard pressed to find such a well-preserved original French collector's item for connoisseurs that will give its new owner the gift of delighting numerous passengers and impressing any passers-by.
