Lot no. 298
1959 Bentley S2 Shooting Brake
Coachwork by Harold Radford Ltd
Chassis no. B131AA
This unique left-hand drive Bentley S2 features shooting brake coachwork by Harold Radford Ltd., the exclusive London firm established in the late 1940s. Radford's first design was for a wooden-framed estate car body on the Bentley MkVI chassis. This ‘Countryman' model was an immediate success, winning the 1948 Concours d'Elegance at Cannes. The Countryman was later refined, becoming in effect an early version of the ‘hatchback' concept applied to the standard saloon body on Bentley and Rolls-Royce chassis as well as those of other prestigious makes. Radford exhibited in the coachbuilding section at the London Motor Show from 1951 to 1963, winning numerous awards, and in the 1960s began to reach a wider public with its luxurious Mini conversions. The firm was acquired by H R Owen in the early 1960s.
The sole example of its type manufactured and the last Bentley coachbuilt by Harold Radford, this S2 shooting brake was previously the property of renowned Belgian collector, Hubert Fabri, who restored the car extensively with assistance from Ian Mason and other Rolls-Royce/ Bentley specialists in England between 1998 and 2003. It has the desirable power steering and electric windows options, and has been sensibly upgraded with air conditioning, CD stereo system and electronic ignition. Most attractively finished in two-tone dark green/ grey with champagne leather interior, it comes fully equipped with gun rack and is surely one of the most stylish conveyances ever conceived with the country sportsman in mind. Presented in perfect condition in every department, it is UK registered ‘654 RTC', comes with a substantial file of restoration invoices, valid roadworthiness certificate and UK registration document. The ultimate car for the gentleman who has everything, or perhaps the perfect historic racing support vehicle.
