Sous l'influence de Max Hoffman, importateur officiel de Mercedes-Benz aux Etats-Unis, la marque a développé cette " petite sœur " de la 300 SL, privilégiant le confort sur le sport. La 190 SL reprenait la suspension indépendante à ressorts hélicoïdaux de la berline 180 Ponton. Elle fut équipée d'un sobre et moderne 4 cylindres de 1.897 cm3 développant 105 ch, couplé à une boite mécanique à 4 rapports. Son élégance combinée à un comportement routier sain et une finition de qualité ont permis à la 190 SL de connaitre un vrai succès. Le véhicule présenté est exceptionnel à plus d'un titre. D'une part sa combinaison de couleurs, originale ainsi que l'atteste la copie de la Daten Karte, est très rare. En effet, la voiture arbore une teinte vert tilleul (DB218 Lindgrün) et une capote verte associées à une sellerie spéciale en cuir vert (Leder Grün 1082). D'autre part son histoire est hors du commun, puisqu'elle n'a connu qu'une seule et unique propriétaire depuis sa livraison. Achetée neuve à Caracas au Venezuela en mars 1959 par une jeune américaine de 25 ans, celle-ci a conservé la voiture précieusement jusqu'à son décès l'été dernier en Californie, où elle résidait avec l'auto depuis 1961. Repeinte dans le passé et entretenue, photos d'époque et factures à l'appui, cette 190 SL totalise 89320 km et se trouve dans un bel état de préservation.
