With its air-cooled, rear overhung, flat 4-cylinder engine and sleek, streamlined bodywork, the car was a hit. Production was quickly organised to meet demand, and hand-building was gradually abandoned. - Competition victories reinforced the model's success. When the 356 A went into production in 1955, almost 8,000 had already been built. The range now included a coupé, a cabriolet and a speedster, as well as a prestigious sports car called the Carrera. Porsche introduced the B at the end of 1959. Evolving to meet safety standards, it featured raised front and rear bumpers, shell-shaped indicators, wider door handles and higher headlights. As for engines, the 1300 disappeared, making way for the 1600, available in three versions: 60, Super 75 and Super 90. - The car illustrating these pages is a 1959 356 B (T5) coupé, in the 1600 Super 75 version. Logically bodied by Reutter, it still sports its matching numbers body plate. - Unearthed after more than 40 years from a commercial warehouse in the Poitiers region, this is a car in need of complete restoration, and the engine is missing. Prior to any auction, the car should be thoroughly inspected for any missing parts. - It is likely that this car was raced by Robert Buchet, a charismatic local driver and tuner.
