Créant l’évènement autour de son stand, la marque anglaise vient de faire basculer sa production dans l’ère moderne et marque d’un pas prononcé son entrée dans la cour des grands. Avec 240 chevaux sous le capot tiré d’un moteur 6 cylindres en ligne à double arbres à cames en aluminium le tout alimenté par deux gros carburateurs SU HD8, la DB4 est un féroce concurrent aux Ferrari 250 ou Jaguar XK150 puis Jaguar Type-E dont les moteurs ont beaucoup de similitudes. De nombreuses versions viendront restyler la DB4 dans un souci d’améliorations esthétiques et mécaniques ; de nombreuses surchauffes moteurs étaient à déplorer sur les premières versions. Entre-temps, Aston Martin remporte la première place aux 24h du Mans en 1959 grâce à la DBR1 et au talent de pilotage de Caroll Shelby ce qui fait augmenter les ventes de la DB4. La carrosserie, dessinée en élégant « fast back » est dû à un judicieux mariage de la firme avec l’entreprise Touring qui se démènera sur ce modèle à faire épouser des feuilles d’aluminium sur un treillis tubulaire. Un autre mariage anglo-italien est célébré en 1960 avec l’arrivée de leur création, l’Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato dessinée par Ercole Spada et assemblée en 19 exemplaires seulement chez le carrossier milanais. La GT Zagato est surement l’une des plus belles voitures d’après-guerre jamais créée et fera entrer la DB4 dans la légende. En 1961 est dévoilée la série III de la DB4 qui se verra apposer de nouveaux feux arrière et qui est également la dernière version à porter la calandre originale des premières séries. La gamme DB4 se terminera en 1963 avec la série V, très proche de l’Aston Martin DB5. Livrée à l’origine dans cette belle couleur « plum » (prune en anglais), cette Aston Martin DB4 fut achetée par un riche lainier des Pyrénées en 1961. Extrêmement rare sur nos routes à l’époque, le bolide devait être une véritable curiosité dans ce pays escarpé où le chant du 6 cylindres était amplifié par l’écho des montagnes. Après quelques années d’emploi et de plaisirs, l’artisan revend sa belle anglaise à un danseur parisien qui la cède à Mr Bertin, banquier de la capitale. Maniaque et amoureux de son coupé, ce troisième propriétaire pris le soin de faire entretenir régulièrement sa voiture chez Richard Williams à Londres ce qui lui permit de traverser la décennie en conservant sa belle patine d’époque. C’est en 1977, 16 ans après la sortie d’usine de cette DB4 que Mr M. collectionneur aguerri de voitures anglaises et écrivain célèbre de livres sur la marque achète notre exemplaire, séduit par son histoire et par sa rare origine française. Avoir cet exemplaire devant les yeux c’est participer à une expérience où la quasi-totalité des sens se mettent en éveil ; la vision de cette ligne mythique sublimée par cette couleur originale en est un avant-gout. Pénétrer dans son habitacle c’est prendre place à bord d’une capsule temporelle ; tout est là comme en 1961, seule la force du temps a fait son ouvrage en magnifiant l’aspect esthétique de ce coupé. Les cuirs noirs arborent une belle patine d’usage comme l’ensemble du tableau de bord mais le tout reste en bel état et surtout fonctionnel, les différents propriétaires ont pris grand soin de conserver l’auto en état de marche quelque soit l’époque. Un quart de clé vers la droite et le 6 cylindres en ligne s’ébranle devant vous dans une sonorité roque mais discrète. A la conduite, la DB4 se comporte très bien et restons surpris de sa santé mécanique pour une dame qui vient de souffler ses 60 bougies. Direction, freinage, accélération, embrayage, tout est parfaitement réglé et appellent à conduire cette sculpture automobile pendant de longues heures sur les routes de campagne. D’une voiture qui faisait rêver à sa sortie d’usine en 1961, notre exemplaire n’a rien perdu de sa superbe ; si certaines choses se bonifient avec l’âge, cette DB4 en fait partie. Creating the event around its stand, the English brand has just tipped its production in the modern era and marks a pronounced step into the big leagues. With 240 horsepower under the hood and a 6-cylinder in-line engine with dual aluminum camshafts all powered by two large SU HD8 carburettors, the DB4 is a fierce competitor to the Ferrari 250 or Jaguar XK150 and then Jaguar Type-E whose engines have many similarities. The DB4 will be restyled by many versions in the interest of aesthetic and mechanical improvements; many engine overheats were to be deplored on the first versions. Meanwhile, Aston Martin won the first place at the Le Mans 24h in 1959 thanks to the DBR1 and the driving talent of Caroll Shelby which increases the sales of the DB4. The bodywork, designed in an elegant «fast back» is due to a judicious marriage of the firm with the company Touring who will struggle on this model to make aluminum sheets on a tubular lattice. Another Anglo-Italian wedding was celebrated in 1960 with the arrival of their creation, the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato designed by Ercole Spada and assembled in only 19 copies at the Milanese body shop. The GT Zagato is surely one of the most beautiful post-war cars ever created and will bring the DB4 into the legend. In 1961, the Series III of the DB4 was unveiled, which will be fitted with new tail lights and is also the latest version to carry the original grille of the first series. The DB4 range will end in 1963 with the V series, very close to the Aston Martin DB5. To have this copy before the eyes is to participate in an experience where almost all the senses are awakened; the vision of this mythical line sublimated by this original color is a preview. Entering its interior means taking place aboard a time capsule; everything is there as in 1961, only the force of time made its work by magnifiing the aesthetic aspect of this coupe. The black leathers have a nice patina of use as the whole dashboard but everything remains in good condition and especially functional, the different owners took great care to keep the car in working condition whatever the time. A quarter of a key to the right and the 6 cylinders in line shakes in front of you in a roque but discreet sound. When driving, the DB4 behaves very well and remain surprised by its mechanical health for a lady who has just blown her 60 candles. Steering, braking, acceleration, clutch, everything is perfectly adjusted and call to drive this car sculpture for long hours on the country roads. From a car that made us dream when leaving the factory in 1961, our model has lost nothing of its superb; if some things improve with age, this DB4 may be part of it.
