A fine restoration project in prospect!
A fine restoration project in prospect!
- On 8 June 1948, the German government approved production of the first Porsche. Ferdinand Porsche's 356th project, it took the name 356. With its air-cooled, rear overhung, flat 4-cylinder engine and sleek, streamlined bodywork, the car was a hit. Production was quickly organised to meet demand, and hand-building was gradually abandoned.
- Competition victories reinforced the model's success. When the 356 A went into production in 1955, almost 8,000 had already been built. The range now included a coupé, a cabriolet and a speedster, as well as a prestigious sports car called the Carrera. Porsche introduced the B at the end of 1959. Evolving to meet safety standards, it featured raised front and rear bumpers, shell-shaped indicators, wider door handles and higher headlights. As for engines, the 1300 disappeared, making way for the 1600, available in three versions: 60, Super 75 and Super 90.
- The car illustrating these pages is a 1963 356 B (T6) coupé, in the 1600 Super 90 version. Possibly due to an accident and a body change, please note that the period registration document accompanying the car and the bodywork plate riveted into the door pillar indicate the identity 123925, while the cold stamping of the bodywork indicates 117745. It will therefore be up to the purchaser to take the necessary steps to duly register this car and give it the appropriate identity.
- Unearthed after more than 40 years at the bottom of a shop in the Poitiers region, this is a car in need of complete restoration, both structurally and mechanically.
- Restoration of 356s is no longer so common, and this example will delight a Porsche enthusiast, whether experienced or a beginner, with a long-term project in mind. To be continued.
