1965 Lancia Flaminia SuperSport 2.8 3C ‘Double Bubble' Coupé Coachwork by Carrozzeria Zagato Chassis no. 826232014 In the 1960s, the work of Carrozzeria Zagato reached its peak as its founder, Ugo Zagato, neared the end of his life. Zagato had pioneered the use of lightweight materials among Italian coachbuilders and he had a sure eye for line. An example was the glorious body Zagato built for Lancia's top-of-the-range Flaminia Sport and SuperSport, 1959-67. It was a beautifully balanced design which could be specified with the key-note Zagato 'double-bubble' roofline. It clothed a chassis derived from Vittorio Jano's Aurelia, with coil-spring and wishbone front suspension in place of Lancia's traditional sliding pillars, though a de Dion rear axle was retained. The 2.5 litre V6 engine also derived from the Aurelia, but was developed to give 150 bhp which meant a top speed of around 130 mph (208 kph). Later cars featured a 2.8 litre engine, and a ‘3C' three carburettor high performance option was available: this example has both. The Flaminia SuperSport inherited a sporting pedigree so a limited-slip different was standard and it was also one of the first cars to have servo-assisted disc brakes all round. The level of trim and equipment was also very high, as was the price which put it on the same level as a Maserati or Aston Martin. For a long time, Lancias of this period were considered too complicated to restore so this SuperSport is now a very rare car. It was first delivered to Rome in 1965, passing in 1976 to a Swedish gentleman and finally to the current and third owner in Germany in 1999. Since then the car has been completely restored, with mechanics totally rebuilt (all new or restored parts), a bare aluminium repaint in Grigio Metallizzato and new upholstery in oxblood leather, with new headlining and grey carpets in the cabin and boot area. A full list of work carried out is available, and the end result is a car described “as new, but better built”. Subtle improvements include a period radio with hidden CD player and amplifier, period Carello driving lights, Koni shocks, fully balanced engine, high performance radiator, concealed electronic ignition and a big bore exhaust system. The bumpers have been removed for a sportier look but the rear is available if required. Final tuning of the car has been carried out on a rolling road, since when 3,000km have been covered. German registered and with fresh TüV certificate of roadworthiness, this rare Lancia Flaminia SuperSport Zagato is the height of understated elegance and offers a stylish alternative to a modern GT for almost everyday use. Depuis, une restauration totale fut engagée avec la mécanique entièrement refaite (toutes les piéces étant soit rénovées soit changées), une mise à nu de la carrosserie avant peinture couleur ‘Grigio Metallizzato', l'installation d'une nouvelle sellerie couleur lit-de-vin, d'un ciel de toit neuf et de nouveaux tapis gris dans le cockpit et le coffre. Une liste complète des travaux effectués est disponible et le résultat en découlant est une voiture décrite “comme neuve mais plus aboutie”. De subtiles améliorations on été apportées: un poste radio d'époque avec un lecteur CD et amplificateur dissimulés, des phares d'appoint Carello d'époque, des amortisseurs Koni, un moteur ré-équilibré, un radiateur hautes performances, l'allumage électronique et un échappement sport. Les pare-chocs ont été enlevés (élément arrière disponible si nécessaire) pour donner à cette Flaminia un look résolument sportif. Depuis les dernières mises au point, la voiture n'a parcouru que 3,000km.
