Lot no. 119
French title Chassis n° 10476 - Archetypal berlinetta sports car of the 1960s - Two owners from new, 23.000 km on the clock... - Rival to the Alpine in all its splendour in the Luxe version - No reserve Originally called the René Bonnet Djet, this model evolved cosmetically and was given the Matra name after the company was taken over in 1964. This example was a demonstration car in 1966 and 1967, before being bought by the French Ball-Trap Champion, who drove it for some three years. After that, the car sat in his garage with a mechanical problem, and remained there for the next 39 years, until the current owner, an important collector from South West France, acquired it in 2009. A friend of the owner then began a major restoration, with no restrictions on the time and cost of the project. The engine, running on unleaded petrol, had the sump enlarged. The upholstery was re-done and carpets replaced. The body was stripped and re-painted to a high standard. Benefitting from the special features of the " Luxe " version, the car has a proper front bumper, wooden dashboard and steering wheel and a removable sunroof. A lovely detail: the car is fitted with 15-inch wheels, one of just five sets, still branded René Bonnet, made by Michelin for a special order by Henri Pescarolo for the Critérium des Cévennes. The clock displays just 23,000 km, corresponding to the car's history. Here is a wonderful example of one of the very first Matras, combining sportiness, exclusivity and a real elegance.
