Présenté en octobre 1961, le cabriolet Peugeot 404 dispose de nombreux atouts qui contribueront à son succès. En effet, sa carrosserie aux lignes d'une grande élégance sont dues au carrossier Pininfarina tandis que la fiabilité mécanique est assurée par des éléments éprouvés qui font la réputation de la marque Sochalienne. L'exemplaire présenté constitue la version la plus désirable, puisqu'il est doté de la mécanique plus puissante, équipée de l'injection et de la finition Super Luxe d'origine. Le conservatoire Citroën nous a également confirmé qu'il était sorti d'usine le 12 octobre 1966, et vendu neuf dans les Alpes Maritimes, département qu'elle ne quittera qu'en 2013 lors de son achat par l'actuel propriétaire. Ce dernier confie ensuite le véhicule au Garage bourguigon Rétropassion, afin qu'il le restaure. Les travaux se sont étalés sur 3 ans, et plus de 28 000€ ont été dépensés. La carrosserie a été restaurée et repeinte en bleu océan, tandis que l'on retrouve le bleu 1041 d'origine dans le compartiment moteur. Moteur et boite ont été entièrement remis en état avec démontage complet. L'hydrovac, conforme à la configuration d'origine a été refait. La sellerie en cuir a quant à elle été partiellement restaurée, conservant les sièges et accoudoirs d'origine. Nous avons noté que la montre d'origine avait été remplacée par un compte-tour qui n'est pas fonctionnel. Un essai a révélé un bon fonctionnement mécanique. Le freinage est équilibré et l'embrayage progressif. N'ayant que peu roulé depuis sa remise en état, la voiture est chaussée de pneus proches du neuf. Unveiled in October 1961, the Peugeot 404 convertible had many virtues, which contributed to its success. Indeed, its bodywork with its elegant lines is the work of Pininfarina, while mechanical reliability was assured by the proven elements that make the reputation of Peugeot. The example on offer is the most desirable version, since it is equipped with the more powerful mechanicals, with the injection and the original Super Luxe finish. The Citroën Conservatory also confirmed that it had left the factory on October 12, 1966, and sold new in the Alpes Maritimes, a department where it would remain until 2013, when it was purchased by the current owner. The latter then entrusted the vehicle to Garage Rétropassion for restauration. The work spanned three years, and more than €28,000 was spent. The bodywork has been restored and repainted in ocean blue, while the original blue 1041 shade can be found in the engine compartment. Engine and gearbox have been completely re-conditioned, after complete disassembly. The hydrovac, conforming to the original configuration, has been redone. The leather upholstery has been partially restored, retaining the original seats and armrests. We noted that the original clock had been replaced by a non-functional tachometer. A test revealed good mechanical operation. The braking is balanced and the clutch progressive. With very few miles since refurbishment, the tires are almost new.
