The all-new Clio (Phase 1) benefited from an optimised engine, including a 16-valve cylinder head, enabling the 1,746 cm3 4-cylinder engine derived from the R19 to develop 140 bhp. - The chassis is not to be outdone, and the look, with its special wheels and dented bonnet, is commensurate. With its low weight and optimised running gear, it was an explosive cocktail, but it met with only moderate success, eclipsed during its career by the legendary Williams. Between 30,000 and 35,000 Clios are thought to have been sold, a far cry from the 332,942 examples of the 205 GTI, all versions combined, between 1984 and 1994. - The car which illustrates these pages was delivered on 12 July 1995 by Garage Renault-Lille to its first owner, and registered on 28 July 1995.
