Rosenberg et al, Drawings from the Christian and Isabelle Adrien Collection, Paris, 2012, no 6 (note by Ketty Gottardo) This drawing is closely related to Jacopo Bassano's Saint Moro and Saint Roch Adoring the Virgin and Child (Museo Civico, Bassano del Grappa), commissioned around 1576 by Podestà Moro in thanks for deliverance from the plague. Executed in bold black and red chalk, the sheet reflects Bassano's mature style and his debt to Titian, evident in its dynamic handling and tonal richness (Gottardo, 2012). Two other preparatory drawings in red chalk are known: one attributed to Jacopo (1986) and another to his son Leandro (1992), both lacking the spontaneity of this sheet. Rearick suggested they were once part of the Sagredo family collection, possibly acquired by Doge Nicolò Sagredo in 1651. A volume of 201 Bassano drawings from this collection was later purchased by John Udny in 1762, making it plausible that this drawing was originally part of that group.
