Account of the failed 1897 North Pole balloon expedition. Shortly after leaving Svalbard in July 1897, the balloon lost hydrogen and crashed on the ice floe after only two days of travel. The explorers escaped unharmed, but had to make a perilous trek southwards across the drifting ice. Ill-dressed, ill-prepared and ill-equipped for such an adventure, and surprised by the difficulty of the undertaking, they were unable to find an escape route.
